Titanic the musical event in Belfast festival in April 2012

From 1909 to 1912, the town of Belfast watched as the biggest and most luxurious ocean liner inside the planet materialised on Queen’s Island in Belfast Harbour.

To commemorate the centenary in the RMS Titanic’s design and maiden voyage, the town is internet hosting a three-week pageant that boasts some a hundred and twenty international-scale events for all ages, like performs, excursions, talks, movies and major musical activities.

Titanic Belfast Festival 2012 runs from March 31st to April 22nd.

Here are the highlights. Festival Highlights

  • March 31: Titanic Belfast opens

The model new, multi-million pound Titanic Belfast, the world’s biggest Titanic-themed visitor attraction, kicks off the festival by opening its doors on March 31st. For much more on this legendary building in the Titanic Quarter as well as the exhibition it homes.

  • April 7-11: Titanic Light Show

A spectacular light show will showcase the iconic new Titanic Belfast visitor attraction. A launch event takes place on April 7th, followed by an installation every single evening featuring this impressive new creating in the Titanic Quarter.

  • April 7-10: Easter Festival

Over the Easter weekend, an array of Titanic-related exhibitions, artefacts, tours, films talks and family enjoyable will be held at Belfast City Hall.

  • April 13th: MTV presents Titanic Sounds

MTV will stage a night of live music against the spectacular backdrop of the Titanic slipways (SOLD OUT).

  • April 14th: A Commemoration in Music and Film

‘Titanic: A Commemoration in Music and Film’ will probably be broadcast live on April 14th on BBC Two from Belfast’s Warerfront Hall. This 90-minute televised occasion takes spot in commemoration of all people who died on Titanic’s maiden voyage and in celebration with the craftsmanship it took to develop this iconic ship. The occasion will feature a star-studded lineup of neighborhood and international performers, which includes the Ulster Orchestra, the legendary Bryan Ferry, Grammy award-winning soul and R&B singer/songwriter Joss Stone, classical violinist Charlie Siem and acclaimed English tenor Alfie Boe. Archive and specially commissioned documentary material, accompanied by gorgeous visual effects, will retell the story in the Titanic, those that built it and those who perished or survived its maiden voyage. The occasion will also include appearances from Armagh-born actor Colin Morgan (Merlin) and Belfast actor Ian McElhinney (City of Ember, Closing the Ring and Game of Thrones). Tickets for this occasion are selected by a random draw. To enter the draw, register at (maximum of four tickets per household) by Wednesday, March 28that 5pm.

  • April 22 – May 20: Courtroom drama by Owen McCafferty runs at the MAC

Following Titanic’s tragic demise, the British government ordered a formal inquiry into the accident. More than the course of 36 days, nearly 100 witnesses were asked some 25,000 questions. A new courtroom drama by Belfast-born playwright Owen McCafferty based on the verbatim testimonies heard at the Titanic Inquiry in London in 1912 will likely be staged at Belfast’s brand new arts venue, the MAC (Metropolitan Arts Centre), from April 22nd to May 19th.

  • September 8th: BBC Northern Ireland Music Occasion

BBC Northern Ireland will host a musical celebration of culture, achievement, people and places. Details for this major outdoor occasion, taking spot in the Titanic Quarter, are still to be announced.
